Doctors and Interrogators at Guantanamo Bay”
July 7, 2005, free full text
Mounting evidence from many sources, including Pentagon documents, indicates that military interrogators at Guantanamo Bay have used aggressive counter-resistance measures in systematic fashion to pressure detainees to cooperate.”

Long-Term Outcomes of Coronary-Artery Bypass Grafting versus Stent Implantation”
Conclusions
For patients with two or more diseased coronary arteries, CABG is associated with higher adjusted rates of long-term survival than stenting.

Statins and the Risk of Colorectal Cancer”
Conclusions
The use of statins was associated with a 47 percent relative reduction in the risk of colorectal cancer after adjustment for other known risk factors. Because the absolute risk reduction is likely low, further investigation of the overall benefits of statins in preventing colorectal cancer is warranted”

Population

Recommendation

Patients without documented CHD

Eat a variety of (preferably oily) fish at least twice a week. Include oils and foods rich in -linolenic acid (flaxseed, canola, and soybean oils; flaxseed and walnuts)

Patients with documented CHD

Consume 1 g of EPA+DHA per day, preferably from oily fish. EPA+DHA supplements could be considered in consultation with the physician.

Patients needing triglyceride lowering

Two to four grams of EPA+DHA per day provided as capsules under a physician’s care

Children and pregnant and lactating women may be at increased risk for mercury intoxication from fish consumption but also are at low risk for CHD. Thus, avoidance of potentially contaminated fish is a higher priority for this group. For middle-aged and older men and postmenopausal women, the benefits of fish consumption far outweigh the risks within the guidelines established by the FDA and Environmental Protection Agency. Consumption of a wide variety of species within the guidelines is the best approach to both minimizing mercury exposure and increasing omega-3 fatty acid intake.

American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology Foundation Guide to Warfarin Therapy (2003)
(SUMMARY OF ELEVATED INR MANAGEMENT WITH SELECTED EDITS)
http://circ.ahajournals.org/cgi/content/full/107/12/1692

When the INR is above the therapeutic range but <5, . . .  not developed clinically significant bleeding, and rapid reversal is not required . . ., the dose of warfarin can be reduced or the next dose omitted . . .”

If the INR is between 5 and 9 . . . not bleeding and has no risk factors that predispose to bleeding, the next 1 or 2 doses of warfarin can be omitted and warfarin reinstated at a lower dose  . . . Alternatively, the next dose of warfarin may be omitted and vitamin K1 (1 to 2.5 mg) given orally . . . if the patient is at increased risk of bleeding.

. . . more rapid reversal is required to allow urgent surgery or dental extraction, vitamin K1 can be given orally in a dose of 2 to 5 mg, anticipating reduction of the INR within 24 hours. An additional dose of 1 or 2 mg vitamin K can be given if the INR remains high after 24 hours.

If the INR is >9 but clinically significant bleeding has not occurred, vitamin K1, 3 to 5 mg, should be given orally, anticipating that the INR will fall within 24 to 48 hours. The INR should be monitored closely and vitamin K repeated as necessary.

When rapid reversal  . . . serious bleeding or major warfarin overdose (eg, INR >20), vitamin K1 should be given by slow intravenous infusion in a dose of 10 mg, supplemented with transfusion of fresh plasma or prothrombin complex concentrate, according to the urgency of the situation. It may be necessary to give additional doses of vitamin K1 every 12 hours.

In cases of life-threatening bleeding or serious warfarin overdose, prothrombin complex concentrate. . . with 10 mg of vitamin K1 by slow intravenous infusion; this can be repeated, . . .  If warfarin is to be resumed after administration of high doses of vitamin K, then heparin can be given until the effects of vitamin K have been reversed and the patient again becomes responsive to warfarin.”

THE LIST (Story of the “Atlanta Child Murders”)
Nominated for a Pulitzer Prize - OUT OF PRINT but available from the author through eBay
You might be surprised to learn that:

Wayne Williams was NEVER charged with, let alone convicted of KILLING ANY CHILD. Instead he was convicted only of killing two bearded adult criminals; one as old as he and the other older than himself.

The murders of children in the Atlanta area DID NOT STOP when Wayne Williams went to jail. The LAST child VICTIM was placed on the arbitrary list two months before Wayne Williams "went to jail." Yet others WHO HAD SEX with some of the victims; and who some of the VICTIMS SLEPT WITH on their last nights alive - convicted "child molesters" - went to jail at the time the last CHILD VICTIM was placed on THE LIST.

. . .

While investigating a murder, police failed to find the body of the murder victim's murdered child under the seat cushion of a couch in the room next to where the mother's body had been found. This discovery was left to be made by child's paternal grandmother after police had "cleared" the scene.

NO ONE has ever even claimed to have seen Wayne Williams harm anyone, let alone kill anyone. People who claimed to have seen Williams with a victim on dates prior to their disappearances were referred to by the media as "eye witnesses." One of these sightings should have been known to prosecutors to have been impossible as the victim identified had been burried three months BEFORE the alleged sighting. One supposedly took place in a sports car the likes of which Wayne Williams was never shown to have had access. This testimony was given by a "witness" who admitted on the stand that he had "smoked some weed" before taking the witness stand.

 . . .

No weapon was found, NOT ONE piece of evidence which could even be claimed to have come from a victim was found in the Williamses' home where police claim many of the killings took place.

The prosecutor said it was the only time in his long career that he had ever obtained a murder conviction when he didn't have the slightest idea, where, when or how the murder(s) had been committed.

 . . .

Is Wayne Williams even guilty of the two murders of which he stands convicted? Judge for yourself. Read THE LIST

by the author, Chet Dettlinger (READ THE  AUTHOR’S ENTIRE SUMMARY AT LINK BELOW)

Abu Ghraib: its legacy for military medicine

Steven H. Miles
“The complicity of US military medical personnel during abuses of detainees in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Guantanamo Bay is of great importance to human rights, medical ethics, and military medicine. Government documents show that the US military medical system failed to protect detainees' human rights, sometimes collaborated with interrogators or abusive guards, and failed to properly report injuries or deaths caused by beatings.”

SYNERGY TRIAL results released July 7, 2004 JAMA                                                                                                Enoxaparin vs Unfractionated Heparin in High-Risk Patients With Non–ST-Segment Elevation Acute Coronary Syndromes Managed With an Intended Early Invasive Strategy
Conclusions
Enoxaparin was not superior to unfractionated heparin but was noninferior for the treatment of high-risk patients with non–ST-segment elevation ACS. Enoxaparin is a safe and effective alternative to unfractionated heparin and the advantages of convenience should be balanced with the modest excess of major bleeding. http://jama.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/abstract/292/1/45   (abstract)

Fortunately, many dressings/mayonaise are relatively low in saturated fat BUT still high in fat and calories.  The same is true of many nuts like peanuts; therefore, they should be eaten in moderation

Warning: many “health/nutrition” bars are not so low in calories and have SAT FAT content higher than many foods found today.   The saturated fat content is down tremendously even in high calorie/high fat foods like most potato chips and many high calorie/high sugar/high fat junk foods.
