“The results also have changed over time. In 2003 outcomes were worse with DES but the difference disappeared in 2004 and by 2005, he said, “we can see clearly better results” for DES versus BMS. ”
“So, drug-eluting stents are not as dangerous as they looked in 2003 and bare-metal stents are probably safer as far as restenosis,” he said. “Because of the moderate effect on restenosis, we don’t recommend unselected use of drug-eluting stents. Rather, as in Sweden today, these stents should be limited to high-risk situations such as longer lesions and smaller vessels.”
Finally, Dr. James added, because of the limitations of registry data analysis, large-scale randomized study data are still very much needed.
